Bereavement modular course: The first two sessions

portrait1

The first two days of this module, designed to train volunteers at Saint Catherine’s Hospice, Scarborough, UK, is complete.

On the first day, Monday September 2nd 2013, we looked at the philosophy of our course, which expects of the students both personal and professional growth. We invited the students to consider how events in their lives have shaped their attitudes to loss and grief.

On the second day, Tuesday September 3rd 2013, we looked at the work of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth in the development of Attachment Theory. Later we looked at the work of Carl Rogers in the development of humanistic counselling.

In the afternoon we divided the students into two counselling skills groups where they practised active listening skills. Each student took away a digital recording of his or her practice session.

Feedback from the students has been very positive, and we are all looking forward to the third session on Tuesday 17th September 2013.
